Did You Know That A Dentist Can Help Treat Sleep Apnea? Here’s How!

If you experience frequent fatigue and irritability when you’re awake, and loud snoring when you fall asleep, you may suffer from sleep apnea. This sleeping disorder occurs when a person stops breathing repeatedly during their sleep (usually up to 10 seconds or longer). When this happens, the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen which contributes to a poor quality of sleep throughout the night – and potential serious health risks.

We can help after a sleep apnea diagnosis!

While Hassey cannot diagnose sleep apnea, we can offer dental solutions to help after diagnoses. One of the exciting products we offer is called the Narval Mandibular Repositioning Device (MRD). Why is this product so exciting? It’s the first MRD to utilize computer aided design and technology – meaning an extremely precise fit and remarkable treatment result.

The Narval CC is a custom made, adjustable mouth appliance that holds the lower jaw in a forward position during sleep. This expands the gap behind the tongue, opening the air passageway when a person is sleeping. Clinical studies show that custom-made MRDs are effective in treating mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. In one of the world’s largest MRD clinical studies, 84% of patients experienced successful therapy with the MRD device.

Some of the benefits an individual may experience from using a MRD:

  • Custom fitted for optimal results
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Removes the need for noisy CPAP machines
  • Reduces daytime sleepiness
  • Limits snoring tendency
  • Decrease life-threatening risks caused by sleep apnea, including high blood pressure and cardiovascular issues
  • Extremely easy to travel with

Taking measures to improve sleep quality is vital for maintaining proper physical and emotional health. If you’re experiencing sleep problems it may a good idea to talk to our dental team about using the Narval CC or other sleep apnea solutions.
