At Home or Professional In-Office – Which Whitening Is Better for You?

professional tooth whiteningDo you want to take your smile from drab to dazzling? Whitening is a very easy way to help transform your appearance and make you look and feel your best! However, we know that with the vast number of whitening options available, it can be difficult to choose the right one. In this blog post, we will tell you more about the whitening choices we provide as well as discuss the differences between professional whitening and over-the-counter (OTC) kits.

What are the different professional whitening choices offered by Hassey Do Duy?

For your convenience, we offer two whitening options—LUMIBRITE Chairside Whitening and the LUMIBRITE take-home whitening kit. During the in-office procedure, one of our dentists first applies professional-grade whitening gel to your teeth and then uses the Sapphire Plasma Arc Curing and Whitening Light to brighten your smile. This procedure allows you to leave the office just an hour later with a stunning smile that is up to 12 shades brighter!

Maybe you are thinking that you would rather obtain your beautiful new smile gradually. If that is the case, you might want to opt for our LUMIBRITE take-home whitening kit instead. With this kit, we create a custom-made whitening tray and provide you with a lower concentration whitening gel. You simply wear the tray for an hour or so each day for up to 2 weeks. These results are also dramatic, allowing you to whiten your teeth up to 9 shades!

What are the benefits of professional whitening?

Professional whitening offers better results at a faster pace. Since you are being supervised by a dentist, the whitening concentration is higher. This means that you will quickly transform your teeth to a whiter shade than you would with an over-the-counter kit. Additionally, unless your teeth are in great condition and not prone to sensitivity, you should think twice before using an at-home whitening kit. Unfortunately, bleaching molecules in at-home kits can get trapped in nerve passageways, which temporarily increases sensitivity.

What are the advantages of at-home whitening?

If you cannot spare an hour at the dentist office, in-home whitening may be the way to go. You can whiten your teeth when it is most convenient for you, and this is also a more affordable option.  Just make sure that, as with any dental product, you look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance when selecting a whitener.

Which would you recommend for me?

If your teeth and gums are in excellent condition and you do not want to substantially whiten your smile, but you would still like to see some changes, there are many at-home kits on the market that can still do a nice job. However, if you are experiencing gum disease—as half of American adults do—we recommend seeing a professional. At Hassey Do Duy Dental Associates, we can make sure that your teeth and gums are protected during the process, minimizing the risk of increased sensitivity.

We can also get you a whiter smile than you would experience with an at-home kit. This is the main reason most people prefer to have whitening done by a professional.
